Have you ever set out on a trip expecting one thing, only to find yourself pleasantly surprised in the best possible way?

That was my experience in the summer of 2023 at Camp Indie – an adult summer camp located in the serene Berkshire Mountains near Kent, CT.

Here, my dreams of becoming a digital nomad collided with an unexpected inner child healing experience. In a sense, I felt bamboozled but again, in a good way.

I loved Camp Indie so much in 2023 that I decided to invest in this experience again and came back in 2024.

Discovering Camp Indie: Fulfilling Childhood Dreams

As a Latina kid in the US, one of the childhood things that I always felt I missed out was on the sleep-away camp experience growing up. My Colombian parents did not believe in their kids sleeping out of the house at a summer camp, EVER! We were allowed to go sleepover at one of our cousins’ houses and that was it.

Also, growing up in a Latino household meant for many, that we were constantly told that there was no money for this type of activity, even if we knew our parents had the money. I had some friends that were allowed to go to summer camp every year and I was secretly jealous of them!

Imagine my surprise when my friend Christine Lozada was promoting a unique experience in her Instagram stories… Camp Indie. An adult summer camp?! Who, what, where, why, how much, and again what???!!

I had never heard of such a thing and it was my chance to finally live out that childhood dream at the ripe age of … teenage 42 😬. Little did I know, that this unconventional conference would be so much more than just learning how to become a digital nomad—it was about reclaiming lost childhood experiences.

I made the trip there from NYC with Elisabeth (read more about her, a Latina mom who solo travels the world). On the 2.5 hour drive to Kent, we had a great time chatting as it was also our first time meeting in person even though we had met online many times.

From the moment I arrived, I felt a mix of excitement and nervousness! I saw people that I had met at other travel conferences and that made me feel a little more at ease. However I still did not know what to expect.

In 2023 the first activity after checking in was tie-dying a t-shirt. I loved this activity because I love doing crafty things and this was a great icebreaker. We met more and more people as they were arriving and it was a great conversation starter! Over the weekend, I was in awe of how transformative all of these small campy experiences that brought people together would be in my life.

An Embracing Community and Deep Connections

Camp Indie quickly became a place where I created deep connections with like-minded souls from all walks of life. From digital nomads and aspiring entrepreneurs to artists and adventurers, each person brought a unique perspective and shared a common passion for exploration and growth. I was over the moon because I finally found a group of encouraging people who authentically offer help on how to get each other to the next step. This community is extremely supportive.

Shared Experiences:
Bonding over shared experiences, we celebrated victories, supported one another through challenges, and inspired each other to dream bigger. Whether we engaged in discussions during workshops or enjoyed a night of dancing and fun, every interaction was genuine and enriching.

Lasting Friendships:
What started as encounters at camp has blossomed into lasting friendships that go beyond geographical boundaries. Thanks to the inclusive and supportive environment at Camp Indie, the connections I made at camp since 2023 are continuing to thrive beyond the campgrounds.

Healing and Inner Child Work: The Unexpected Transformation

Before I was diagnosed with cancer, I was pretty skeptical about alternative healing methods. But surviving cancer changed my perspective, making me more open to exploring different paths to healing. One thing I never really believed in though, was breathwork. I mean, how could breathing in a certain way actually help me heal?

Well, let me tell you, breathwork helped me release years of built-up stress and anxiety, giving me clarity. It truly was an emotional rollercoaster—tears flowed, in fact, there was a TON of ugly crying, and through it all, I felt supported by a community that embraced vulnerability with open arms. By the way, most of the participants were ugly crying as well.

Jacob Sokol led us through a guided meditation that had everyone shedding tears and letting go of years of pent-up emotions. To be honest, this was such a beautiful and changing experience. I had never seen so many people (almost 100 of us) sharing a moment of profound vulnerability like this. Egos were put aside and even though we were all laying down on yoga mats side by side, we were each experiencing the healing session individually.

Inner Child Healing:

Doing all the optional healing activities at Camp Indie helped me recognize and confront childhood pain and trauma that I hadn’t dealt with before. It opened my mind to alternative healing methods. Out of all the conferences I’ve attended, I can truly say that Camp Indie marked a before and an after for me.

Why? Because my inner child felt seen and heard. I got to do so many things I wasn’t allowed to do as a child, and it felt incredibly redeeming.

At a conventional conference, you learn new skills and hear a lot of ideas, filling up your mind with valuable knowledge. But once you leave the conference, you fall back into old habits. Maybe you take action, maybe you don’t but the confernece never goes beyond that.

Why is that?

Well at most conferences, the mindset of the attendees is rarely addressed.

Let’s think about this, how can you be a successful entrepreneur if you haven’t dealt with your mindset?

Camp Indie goes beyond the usual by focusing on personal growth and healing, creating a foundation for true success.

Remember, these activities are optional and you are not pressured to participate in any activity that you don’t want to participate in.

However, 99.9% of campers both in 2023 and 2024 attended these healing and authentic relating sessions.

Why? Because they are truly powerful.

Summer Camp Adventures: Sky Cycles & Aquatic Obstacle Courses

So is this camp all about ugly crying and being vulnerable?

ABSOLUTELY NOT, so let’s talk the exciting stuff… camp activities!

There is so much to do at Camp Indie, located at Club Getaway in a small town in the Berkshire Mountains. You can zip line through the treetops, ride the Skycycle (where I had a full-on panic attack but was calmed down by an amazing Club Getaway employee), yell your lungs out on the giant swing, jump on trampolines, go hiking, waterskiing, kayaking, paddle boarding, dance at a themed party, enjoy cocktails (I chose not to, but they offer an unlimited drinks package), take fitness classes, and so much more! The Impact of Camp Indie: Empowerment Beyond Boundaries

Reflecting on both of my experiences at Camp Indie, I am filled with gratitude for the profound impact it has had on my life. The lessons I’ve learned, the friendships it has created, and the personal growth I’ve achieved which continue to resonate long after leaving the campgrounds.

Professional Growth:
Camp Indie empowered me to explore new avenues in my professional journey, providing invaluable clarity on how I can continue my journey to be a full-time entrepreneur / digital nomad. The encouragement and support received from mentors and peers have inspired me to dream bigger.

Personal Empowerment:
On a personal level, Camp Indie has empowered me with self-confidence. I’ve left Camp Indie twice with a clearer sense of purpose and a deeper connection to my authentic self, and to others. I am so enthusiastic about the next steps in my content creation journey. After attending last year’s camp, I launched my travel blog… yes this exact one.

This year, there’s a beautiful project in the works that I will announce soon.

Why I Recommend Camp Indie

If you’re eager for more than just a conference, maybe something more like a transformative experience that nurtures and helps you heal your inner child, Camp Indie is calling you with open arms. Camp Indie provides a supportive environment where you can explore your passions and cultivate meaningful connections.

What is included in the price of the ticket?

👑 A rustic cabin-style accommodation for 3 nights. Depending on your budget, you can get a private cabin or share with multiple people (4 max per cabin). I shared with 3 other attendees, and when you purchase your ticket, you can specify who you will be sharing with.

👑 All meals (8 in total).

👑 All onsite activites (there are TONS of activities). Actually, there is never enough time to do all of the fun activities.

👑 All entertainment and parties.

👑 All workshops and keynote speakers.

Final Thoughts:
Camp Indie isn’t just an event or a conference; it’s a fun, quirky journey—a journey of endless possibilities. You can do so much, from healing workshops to inspiring conversations and breathtaking sunsets, every moment at Camp Indie is a testament to the transformative power of community and connection.

As of right now, I will sadly not be at Camp Indie in 2025 because it coincides with another conference that I’ve had my eye on attending next year, but I plan to return in the future. I carry with me cherished memories, lessons, and a deep appreciation for the extraordinary individuals who make this community thrive. Camp Indie has forever changed my perspective on what it means to live authentically and fearlessly pursue my dreams.
